Naples tickets: the closing-day calendar

The closing day matters more than the queue:

• Monday: the Aquarium, Città della Scienza, the Royal Palace of Portici and the Gallerie d’Italia on Via Toledo are closed.
• Tuesday: MANN, the Sansevero Chapel and the Certosa di San Martino are closed. The ramparts of Castel Sant’Elmo stay open.
• Wednesday: Capodimonte (the park stays open), the Royal Palace and the catacombs are closed.
• Thursday and Sunday: at MANN the rotating sections, including Magna Graecia, are closed. On Sunday Capodimonte closes its first floor.
• Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holidays: the only days the Bourbon Tunnel opens.
• Every day: Naples Underground, San Lorenzo Maggiore, the San Gennaro Treasure Museum, the Maradona Museum in the Spanish Quarter, Pompeii and Herculaneum.

What to book ahead and what to buy on the day

Book ahead: the Sansevero Chapel (on sale up to 60 days before, with a 10-minute grace period), the catacombs and the Bourbon Tunnel, which always require a booking, the guided tour of the Teatro di San Carlo (by email or phone), and the bathing area at Gaiola from May to September. For Pompeii in high season, buy in advance: tickets carry your name and there is a cap of 20,000 visitors a day.

Fine to buy on the day: Santa Chiara (in fact you can only buy it there), San Lorenzo Maggiore, the Royal Palace and the Certosa di San Martino. At Naples Underground everyone who queues gets in, but at busy times the wait is 10 to 90 minutes: if your time is tight, a skip-the-line ticket helps.

Tiqets or GetYourGuide: when they are worth it and when not

Partner tickets fall into three groups.

Same price as the official channel

Catacombs (€13), Bourbon Tunnel (€15), Naples Underground (€18), San Gennaro Treasure Museum (€15), Aquarium and Città della Scienza (€10), hop-on hop-off bus (€27). Here a partner makes sense for free cancellation or to keep all your tickets in one app, though on Tiqets many tickets are refundable only if you pay for that option at checkout.

Same entry, higher price

MANN (€24 on Tiqets, €26 on GetYourGuide, against €20), Pompeii (€27.50 against €20 or €25), Herculaneum (€19.50 against €17.50 online) and San Lorenzo (€10 against €9). If budget matters, buy on the official site. The one sensible exception is MANN on Tiqets, if you need to be able to cancel until the day before.

Dearer because a guide is included

Sansevero with a guide (from €15–16.65 against €15 online), Capodimonte with a two-hour tour (€38.50 against €15), MANN with an archaeologist (€44), the Certosa and Sant’Elmo (€29, in Italian), the Santa Chiara cloister (€25, in Italian, against €7). Worth it if you genuinely want the guide; at Sansevero also when the official site is sold out.

Campania Artecard: when the maths works

The Campania Artecard is the regional pass: a few free entries of your choice, then discounts of up to 50%, and transport on some versions.

• Napoli 3 days, €27: three entries and city transport. MANN, Capodimonte and the Royal Palace add up to €50, so the museums alone pay for the pass.
• Campania 3 days, €41: two entries anywhere in the region plus regional transport, Circumvesuviana included. MANN plus Pompeii (ancient city only) comes to €40, and the train is covered.
• Campania 7 days, €43: five entries, but no transport.

It does not cover Sansevero, Naples Underground, the San Carlo or Santa Chiara; the catacombs and Bourbon Tunnel give only a discount. On Tiqets the Artecard starts at €31 and does not include transport, so check which version you are buying. More on the operator in our Artecard review.

Discounts, free entry and children

Discounts almost always apply only on the official channel, with ID:

• State museums and parks (MANN, Capodimonte, Royal Palace, Certosa, Pompeii, Herculaneum): free under 18; €2 for EU citizens up to 24 or 25, depending on the site. MANN, Capodimonte, the Certosa, Pompeii and Herculaneum are free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month.
• Sansevero Chapel: €8 for ages 18–26, €6 for 10–17, free up to age 9.
• Naples Underground: €15 for ages 11–17, €10 for 5–10, free up to 4.
• Catacombs: €6 under 18, €9 for students and over-65s, free under 6.

Which tickets to buy for one, two or three days

One day in the old town: Sansevero (€15 online), Naples Underground (€18) and the Santa Chiara cloister (€7), €40 in all; the Cathedral is free. Avoid Tuesday.

Two days: add MANN (€20), the catacombs (€13) and Capodimonte (€15), avoiding Tuesday and Wednesday. With three state museums, the €27 Napoli 3-day pass already pays off.

Three days: add Pompeii (€20 or €25) or Herculaneum (€16) by Circumvesuviana. If MANN and Pompeii are both in your three days, the €41 Campania 3-day pass covers both plus the train.
