The Sansevero Chapel Museum is the private museum that holds Giuseppe Sanmartino’s Veiled Christ, in the family chapel of the princes of Sansevero just off Spaccanapoli. Who runs the Sansevero Chapel
The chapel is a private museum, which is why the free state-museum Sundays don’t apply and there is no Campania Artecard discount. It was founded in 1590 by Giovan Francesco di Sangro and given its present form by Raimondo di Sangro, seventh Prince of Sansevero. The museum sells tickets only through its own online shop, ticket.museosansevero.it, and the on-site ticket office.
What you see in the Sansevero Chapel
- The Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino (1753), carved from a single block of marble, shroud included. The story that the veil is cloth turned to marble by alchemy is just that: a story.
- Modesty by Antonio Corradini, a veiled female figure dedicated to Raimondo’s mother.
- Disillusion by Francesco Queirolo, a man freeing himself from a marble net, dedicated to his father.
- The anatomical machines in the underground chamber: two skeletons with their circulatory systems reconstructed.
- The ceiling fresco and the labyrinth floor, of which only part survives.
The visit is self-guided and lasts as long as you like, from a few minutes to over an hour. The official audio guide runs about 25 minutes, in Italian, English, Spanish, French and German, with a children’s version for ages 6 to 12.
Sansevero Chapel tickets: how the official site works
Tickets go on sale 60 days ahead, with entry every 30 minutes from 9am. The museum releases a second batch 2 days before each date, which helps if everything looks sold out at first. You can buy up to 9 tickets per transaction; groups of 10 to 30 use a separate platform. At the museum you show your ticket at the entrance, with no need to queue at the desk.
The rules are clear but strict: no changes, no refunds, 10 minutes’ grace on your time. On price, the official site is the benchmark: the adult ticket lists at €12, which comes to €15 with the costs of the compulsory online booking; €8 for ages 18–26 and for FAI members and police, €6 for ages 10–17, free up to age 9. A disabled visitor and their helper pay €7 together.
Tiqets and GetYourGuide: what they add
What the booking sites sell are guided tours, not plain tickets, and they cost the same as the official online ticket or more. On GetYourGuide the ticket-plus-tour starts at €15, the same price, and includes about 35 minutes of guiding and free cancellation up to 24 hours before: the best balance if you want someone to explain what you are seeing. On Tiqets the skip-the-line tour with a guide starts at €16.65, but it is only refundable if you pay for the flexible option at checkout. The audio guide package at €25.18 costs far more than the official site. The museum allows no more than 9 visitors per guide, so groups stay small.
Getting there and visitor rules
The address is Via Francesco De Sanctis 19/21, behind Piazza San Domenico Maggiore. Metro: Università or Dante (Line 1), Cavour (Line 2), then a 5–10 minute walk. Inside there are no photos, no phone use, no touching the works, and no food or animals. The nave with the Veiled Christ is wheelchair accessible; the chamber with the anatomical machines is reached only by a narrow spiral staircase.
Nearby: Santa Chiara, about 5 minutes away, and the Naples Underground tour on Via dei Tribunali.

If your dates are fixed, buy from the official site as soon as sales open: you pay €15 (the €12 list price plus booking costs) and, with the audio guide, have everything you need. If tickets have gone, or you want the option to cancel, the GetYourGuide guided tour is the best compromise; Tiqets makes sense if the package with Santa Chiara appeals. Can I buy a ticket at the door?
Only to a point. Every visit must be booked; the ticket office sells to parties of up to 9 for dates within the next 7 days, if there is space. Phone and email bookings are not accepted.
What if tickets are sold out?
Tickets go on sale 60 days ahead, and the museum releases more 2 days before each date, so it is worth checking again. Otherwise, the guided tours on GetYourGuide or Tiqets include entry, at a higher price.
Can I change the date or get a refund?
Not on the official site: tickets and booking fees are non-refundable, and a ticket is valid only for the date chosen. If your plans may change, the GetYourGuide tour with free cancellation up to 24 hours before is more flexible.
What happens if I’m late?
Your booking is valid until 10 minutes after the time on the ticket. After that you may be refused entry. Allow for the 5–10 minute walk from the metro.
Why can’t I take photos?
The museum bans photos and video inside out of respect for the space and other visitors, and bans phone use too. The rule applies to everyone, including people on a guided tour.
Are the Tiqets and GetYourGuide tours official?
No. They are run by outside agencies, such as inStazione and Askos, which buy the entry and add a guide. The museum also runs its own guided tours in Italian on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and some special dates: check the price and availability on the official shop.
