Metro and funiculars: the lines you will actually use

ANM’s Line 1 is the visitor’s metro. It runs from Piscinola to Centro Direzionale via Garibaldi (central station and Circumvesuviana), Università, Municipio (port and Molo Beverello), Toledo, Dante, Museo (MANN) and Vanvitelli on the Vomero. From Sunday to Thursday trains run from about 6am to 11pm; on Friday and Saturday the last one leaves Piscinola at 01:20 and Centro Direzionale at 01:32. Trains come every 10 minutes until 8pm, then every 14. ANM says every station is step-free.

Line 6 links Municipio with Mostra in Fuorigrotta, via Chiaia and Mergellina. The service is limited, though: 07:10 to 21:10 on weekdays and only until 14:50 on Saturdays and Sundays, with a train every 20 minutes.

The four funiculars

• Centrale: from Via Toledo (Augusteo) to Piazza Fuga on the Vomero.
• Chiaia: from Parco Margherita to Via Cimarosa, a short walk from Vanvitelli metro.
• Montesanto: closed since 15 May 2026 for its general overhaul, with no reopening date announced. A replacement bus links Piazza Vanvitelli, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza Dante and Piazza Matteotti (from Vanvitelli between 06:30 and 21:32).
• Mergellina: climbs towards Posillipo as far as Via Manzoni, 7am to 10pm according to ANM. Local sources report works on the line, so check its status with ANM first.

All four open at 7am. Centrale and Chiaia run every 10 minutes and close at 22:30, 00:30 or 2am depending on the day of the week (latest on Friday and Saturday).

Naples transport tickets: single rides, day tickets and Tap&Go

In the city you can use ANM tickets or integrated Unico Napoli tickets, valid on every operator. Three matter to visitors:

• ANM single ride: €1.30, one trip on one ANM vehicle (metro, funicular or bus).
• Integrated 90-minute ticket: €1.80, valid on all operators for 90 minutes, including the city sections of the Circumvesuviana and Trenitalia.
• Day ticket: €4.50 for ANM only or €5.40 integrated, valid until midnight on the day you validate it.

Buy them from station machines, licensed tobacconists, newsagents and bars, or in the ANM Go and UnicoCampania apps, and validate before boarding or at the gates. Ordinary tickets are not valid on the Alibus or the Monte Echia lift.

Tap&Go: pay with your card

The simplest option is to tap a contactless card, phone or watch at metro and funicular gates, on EAV trains (Circumvesuviana included) and on the Alibus. The system charges the best fare for the day, up to the price of a day ticket. There are three rules: tap in and tap out, or you are charged the maximum fare; use the same card to enter and exit; and one card per person. Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express, VPay and PagoBancomat are all accepted.

From Capodichino airport to the city

The Alibus is ANM’s public airport shuttle. It reaches Piazza Garibaldi in about 15 minutes, then continues into the port with stops at Immacolatella/Porta di Massa (Caremar ferries) and Molo Beverello (hydrofoils), which it reaches in about 35 minutes. It runs at least every 15 minutes, daily from 05:30 to midnight from the airport; the last bus leaves the port at 23:35.

A ride costs €5. Buy it from the driver, at the machines as you leave Arrivals, in the ANM Go and UnicoCampania apps, or simply tap a contactless card. Validate it as soon as you board. Full details are in our Alibus guide.

Fixed-fare taxis and the shared taxi

Airport taxis charge fixed fares set by the city: €21 to the central station and the historic centre, €24 to the port, Molo Beverello and Piazza Municipio. Ask for the fixed fare before you set off. It is per car and covers luggage and night or holiday supplements; a minivan costs €5 more. There is also a shared taxi to the central station and Molo Beverello at €6 per person, from the “Pick-up” car park about 100 metres from Arrivals.

The Circumvesuviana to Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento

For the ruins and Sorrento you take EAV’s Circumvesuviana, Naples–Sorrento line. Trains start at Napoli Porta Nolana and stop straight after at Napoli Garibaldi, underneath Piazza Garibaldi next to the central station and Metro Line 1. Board at Porta Nolana for a better chance of a seat.

• For Herculaneum get off at Ercolano Scavi.
• For Pompeii get off at Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri, next to the Porta Marina entrance. Don’t confuse it with Pompei Santuario, which is on a different branch.
• Sorrento is the end of the line.

Fares went up in September 2023 and many blogs still quote out-of-date prices. As a guide, Naples–Herculaneum costs €2.60 and Naples–Pompeii about €3.30 one way, but check the fare at the ticket office, the machine or the EAV app before you travel; alternatively, just tap a contactless card at the gates. Campania Express suspended from 1 October 2026

The Campania Express tourist train is suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice. Tickets for later dates are refundable: via EAV’s complaints form if bought from EAV, otherwise from the reseller. Regular trains keep running.

Ferries and hydrofoils: Molo Beverello or Porta di Massa

The port has two boarding points that are easy to mix up. Hydrofoils and fast boats to Capri, Ischia and, in summer, Positano and Amalfi leave from Molo Beverello, opposite Piazza Municipio (Municipio metro, Lines 1 and 6). Caremar ferries and fast ferries, and Medmar ferries to Ischia, leave from Calata Porta di Massa, further east along the port. The Alibus stops at both, so you can go straight from the airport to your boat.

Getting around Naples as a visitor: passes, tour buses and online tickets

The City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off bus (from €27 for 24 hours) is a panoramic tour with commentary: for getting between museums and neighbourhoods, the metro and funiculars cost far less. The Campania Artecard includes transport only in the Napoli 3-day and Campania 3-day versions; the one sold on Tiqets does not.
