Who Civitatis is
Civitatis Tours S.L. is based in Madrid and was founded in 2008 by Alberto Gutiérrez. It is the leading platform for guided tours and excursions in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking markets. The investment firm Vitruvian Partners has been a minority shareholder since 2022 and raised its stake in 2024.
Like GetYourGuide or Viator, Civitatis does not run the tours itself: it sells them for local guides and agencies. The difference lies in its audience and format. Its signature product is the free tour, a walk that costs nothing to book and runs on tips.
Civitatis in Naples: what it sells and for how much
The Naples page lists 102 tours and experiences, with nearly 960,000 travellers served and 49,250 reviews, averaging 8.95 out of 10. The most-reviewed products are:
- two free tours: the old town (9.40/10 from 8,140 reviews) and Naples (8.50/10 from 3,316);
- Naples Underground at €18, rated 9.60/10 from 4,623 reviews, plus a second tour “at Piazza San Gaetano” at €19;
- a Pompeii day trip at €72.73 (8.60/10 from 4,543);
- a pizza-making class from €55 (9.50/10 from 386).
Be careful with the two underground tours: Naples has several underground routes run by different organisations. The official route of the Associazione Napoli Sotterranea has its entrance at Piazza San Gaetano 68 and costs €18 at the door. Check the meeting point and who runs the tour on the product page. Our Naples underground guide compares the routes.
Free tours: how they work and what they really cost
You book for free, follow the guide around the centre and tip at the end. It is a good way to get your bearings on day one, especially in the Spanish Quarter and the old centre, where a good storyteller helps you read the alleys and churches. Guides live on tips, so budget for one.
The rule to remember is the penalty: if you do not cancel at least 6 hours ahead or do not turn up, Civitatis charges you €5. Check what the walk covers, too: if you want to go inside a paid museum such as the Sansevero Chapel, you need a separate ticket.
Cancellation and customer support
Most Naples tours on Civitatis show free cancellation, usually up to 24 hours ahead, but the rule belongs to each product and needs reading on its page.
The weak point, according to reviews, is support: there is no phone number or email address, only an automated chat assistant and forms. Some users report refunds being passed back to the local operator and wrong meeting points. Save your confirmation and the day-of contact for your guide.
What reviewers say
On Trustpilot Civitatis scores 4.5 out of 5 from 194,204 reviews, with only 5% of them one-star. On the App Store the app rates 4.81 in the US (7,401 ratings) and 4.67 in Italy (5,698). Feedback on guides is very positive; complaints focus on support that is hard to reach.
Pros, cons and our verdict on Civitatis in Naples
- Pros: well-reviewed free tours, Naples Underground at the same price as the door, strong guide ratings, few negative reviews.
- Cons: a smaller catalogue than GetYourGuide or Viator, a €5 free-tour no-show fee, no phone or email support, no plain entry tickets for MANN or Sansevero.
Civitatis in Naples is a good pick for a free tour of the centre or a classic guided walk, especially if you speak Spanish. For museums and entry tickets, look elsewhere: start from our Naples tickets guide and compare with Tiqets. If you want a private guide, first read how to check a guide’s licence on our Visite Guidate Napoli page.
We are an independent guide: if you book through the Tiqets or GetYourGuide links on this page we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. We have no arrangement with Civitatis.

FAQ
Are Civitatis free tours really free?
Booking costs nothing and you tip the guide at the end, whatever amount you think is fair. There is a penalty, though: if you do not cancel at least 6 hours ahead or do not show up, Civitatis charges €5.
Can I cancel a paid tour?
Almost all Naples products show free cancellation, usually up to 24 hours ahead. The rule is set per product, so read it before you confirm.
Are the tours in Spanish?
Civitatis was built for Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking travellers, but the language depends on each tour. Check the guide’s language on the product page before booking, especially if your group only speaks English or Italian.
Does Civitatis sell MANN or Sansevero Chapel tickets?
We did not see plain entry tickets for either museum on the Naples page. MANN’s official channel charges €20; for the Sansevero Chapel booking is mandatory on the museum’s own site, at €15 (the €12 list price plus booking costs).
How do I reach customer support?
According to many reviews, this is the weak spot: there is no phone line or email, only an automated chat assistant and online forms. Keep your confirmation and the local operator’s contact from your voucher.
